By what means is it theorized that Ruess died?

Ruess' death is theorized because he disappeared and was never found. There is no definitive conclusion. Thus, different theories for his disappearance are bandied about. Some say he fell while climbing, others say he simply went off the grid, and another believed he drowned crossing the San Juan River.
