Why, according to Rachel, did Bert Cates quit going to Rev. Browns church?

Tommy Stebbins was a smart curious boy and one of Cates’s favorite students. When Stebbins drowned in a local river, Rachel’s father preached about how  the boy would suffer eternal damnation because his parents had failed to baptize him. Cate is upset by both the preacher's reaction and the boy's death.
