In Chapter Four, Saul realizes that both of his parents have become reliant on whiskey to deal with their grief. In turn, he is often left to fend for himself. This period of time was chaotic... but after settling in Redditt, hope returns with work and opportunity.... a time that Saul also connects to his father drinking less.
