Why did the priests and nuns dislike Father Leboutilier?

Father Leboutillier is young and energetic. He is kind to the children and engages in meaningful activities. The other nuns and priests are only interested in breaking these children down, in stamping out the Indian in them so they will assimilate into white Catholic culture.
