Why did Saul say that St. Jerome’s wasn’t really a school?

Saul says that St. Jerome's wasn't really a school because their days were filled with marching and labor. The were "scared" awake, had to wait in line for the toilets, many of them soiled themselves. If they were caught getting out of bed at night.... they were strapped in.
