Father didn't talk about his experience. He kept his trauma buried and hidden. After John’s sister is kidnapped by white Canadians, Saul’s parents lead the remaining family members in nomadic lifestyle so as to evade further harm from white Canadians. John and Mary are both of indigenous descent. However, Mary attended a Christian missionary school as a child, and there she was indoctrinated against native culture. She is a practicing Christian and teaches her children to speak English. Mary clashes with Saul’s grandmother due to these cultural differences. John and Mary disappear one day while on a hunting trip.
