What successes does Saul have?

In Chapter 18, one of the boys on the hockey team suffers an injury. Saul approaches Leboutilier, who coaches the team, and asks to be allowed to play on the team. Saul demonstrates the skills that he has taught himself. Leboutilier, impressed, allows Saul on the team despite Saul’s young age.
