Indian Horse

What do you make of the difference between Sister Ignacia’s attitude towards hockey and Father Leboutilier’s attitude towards hockey? Why is one so supportive of Saul leaving St. Jerome’s and the other not supportive?

Sister Ignacia seems to be a part of the old order of Catholic missionaries that are myopic in their faith. They see the Indian children as savages needing to be assimilated into a Christian faith that is cold and ruthless. Father Leboutilier seems interested in bringing a little light into the children's lives. His interest in hockey give some of the boys an outlet and purpose. He fights to give the children a chance to be kids. Father Leboutilier is of course also paradox as hides a much darker side as well.
