Naomi is, in many ways, the key maternal figure in Saul's life. She believes in tradition and the indigenous spirit world. Saul's mother had a Catholic upbringing and was partially assimilated into that belief system. Saul's mother and Naomi often clash over the two belief systems. Naomi wanted Benjamin, Saul's brother, to be buried on their ancient lands. Saul's mother wanted Benjamin to be buried by a priest in a town.
