Saul's grandmother says to him, "they moved beyond and reach of the old ones now." What do you think she is referring to?

Grandmother is referring to the fact that Saul's parents have moved away from their culture and tradition, embracing the ways of the white man. In doing so, they have moved beyond the reach of the old ones, who wouls have been able to provide grandmother with the power to keep track of them.
