The negative spiral begins when the boys start playing the white teams. They are regularly insulted, spit on, and humiliated by the white audience during games. The final conversion to taciturn takes place when the white men beat each boy and urinate on him behind the roadside cafe. Nobody says a word on the rest of the ride home: the boys are broken.
