There are many quotes in the book that illustrate the fractured sense of identity that St. Jerome's brings. In chapter 2, Father Quinney says,

“We brought you here to save you from your heathen ways, to bring you to the light of the salvation of the one true God. What you learn here will raise you up, make you worthy, cleanse your body and purify your spirit” (page 78)

This quote illustrates why the children were torn away from their families and traditions.
