Chapter 17

As I laced on the skates my fingers actually trembled. Not from the cold but from the knowledge that freedom was imminent, that flight was at hand.

In the above quote, the author iluustrates Saul's feeling about the missionary school.... his sense of hopelessness..... the separation from all he knows. In the simple act of tying his skates, however, we see a glimmer of light, the knowledge that escape is possible..... that the skates and the sport will afford him a sense of identity and a source of hope.
