Saul has experienced some growth, and respite from the Hell of St. Jeromes, through hockey. He is physically stronger but also understands the limitations of hockey in the white world. No matter how good he might be at hockey, he will never be "good" enough because he is Indian. Saul is hesitant about his future in the white world. He is rightly pessimistic about any promises made to him.
