How does Saul finally come to terms with his past? In the novel Indian horse

I think this only happens after he returns to God's Lake an adult. He needs his visions of his grandfather and ancestors. He needs to hit rock bottom before he can slowly climb back into life. I think the ending when he skates with the kids on the rink really shows promise that he has come to terms with his past.
