Father Quinney explains Saul's hockey talent as a gift from God. He implies that St. Jerome's might even have something to do with this gift. This is the main reason he lets Saul leave with Fred Kelly. I think there is a lot of textual evidence to explains Saul’s talent comes from his people and his individual identity. Like his grandfather, Saul is a seer. He can see the energy of a game; he can map out what players will do before they do it. Saul's discipline and passion were in Saul to begin with. Hockey became a spiritual experience for Saul like being under the stars at God's lake. Hockey and Father LeBoutillier merely channelled Saul's gifts into a sport.
