In Chapter 7, Saul overhears his mother and grandmother arguing. Saul’s mother used to be a student at Christian missionary school. Saul’s grandmother disapproves of his mother’s use of English and belief in the religious ideas that were taught at the school. Benjamin soon dies of tuberculosis. Here we see the damage that the Christian missionaries had inflicted on native culture. Mother and grandmother are at odds with each other over identity.
