In Chapter 15, when Saul is eight years old, he is befriended by a young priest named Father Gaston Leboutilier. Leboutilier introduces Saul to the game of hockey. Saul greatly enjoys watching the older boys play it, and he instantly understands the game. Leboutilier says that Saul is too young to play. Saul reads about hockey and watches games on television. This chapter is so important because hockey and Father Gaston Leboutilier become Saul's only saving light in the hell that is St. Jerome's school. Unfortunately, even in this light, there is darkness hidden as we will find out later in the narrative.
