Father Leboutiler is the first "kind" white person most of these children had ever seen. He is young and full of energy. At the time, he doesn't harshly reprimand the kids and seems to want to help them. It is Father Leboutiler who starts the hockey program for the boys. He even protects Saul from many of the abuses at the school. Unfortunately, we find out near the end of the book that there are much darker forces involved with Father Leboutiler,
