There is tension throughout the book between communities. There is an implicit segregation between the two. Saul and his teammates are always let down by the white community when they play hockey. At one point, in a diner, Saul and his team are humiliated in unspeakable ways. Saul feels that he can't continue to the NHL because the racism in the minor leagues was so bad. The government residential schools were nothing short of torture for the native population.
