In the Time of the Butterflies

Why do all the sisters get equal "Screen time"?

Why didn't Julia Alvarez simply make Dede or Minerva the main character?

By focusing on varied characters, Alvarez shows us the many points of view that make up the story. In some ways, all characters are "equal" from the point of view that they all play a significant role in the plot. It is safe to say that the reader gains additional insights by focusing on all characters rather than just one.

Alvarez used all four sisters' point of view so that the reader might understand the point of view and perspective of each. Each of the women had a aprt of the story and were linked not only by beliefs but by blood as well. Each of the women had a story to tell, and although the sisters were incredibly close; the were also very different.
