Being the only survivor of the sisters, Dede feels incredible guilt for not taking part in the revolution. Perhaps a weakness of hers was that Dede tends to be a follower and a pacifist , "the docile middle child, used to following the lead... cheerful, compliant." This leads to people like her husband dominating over her. I suppose that her pacifist ideals also helps her to survive and tell this story which is a good thing.
