I think we can see the racism right away. When Sam first sees Virgil he is simply waiting at a train station. Sam's first words to Virgil are,

Sam identifies Virgil simply by the color of his skin and adds the further insult of calling him "boy". Virgil becomes a suspect simply because he is black.
