There are slight differences. I thought all the characters were pretty consistent with the book, especially Sam and Gillespie. Tibbs seems slightly more aggressive in the movie than the book. There is a scene in the movie when Gillespie invites Tibbs to his house and they have a heart to heart discussion. This scene isn’t in the book.
