Tibbs is an educated and gifted invesigator. We can see he has both academic training and experience in homocide cases. Tibbs is calm and collected. He is maticulous in his attention to detail. Gillespe on the other hand is very crude at investigations. He relies on his size to intimidate people but seldom notices small details and clues. Gillespe is not trained, he only read a few books, in investigation and often takes the easiest path to solve a case.
