What are possible reasons why Jasper Chase abandoned his pledge to do as Jesus would do?

Jasper Chase is the only exception we find in the novel. He takes the pledge to do as Jesus would do but is tempted more by money and fame. He writes his novels against the vow for profit and recognition.
