Capote uses anecdotes to develop the personalities of the killers. The story about the failed attempt to start a hunting lodge with his father, to the stories about the nuns beating him for wetting the bed. Capote wants the reader to feel sympathy for Perry, and through that sympathy, come to a realization that the state has no right to take a life. These are attempts to humanize the killers.
