Susan found the vision of Nancy in the casket, wrapped up in cotton more than she could bear. What was most disturbing to her was that Nancy was wearing a dress she had made (Nancy) and that Susan had helped her choose the material for. Susan noted the first time she'd seen her wear it; it was at a party, and Nancy was dancing.

“Nancy wore her dress of cherry-red.... I helped her pick the material. It was her own design...All I could see was Nancy’s red velvet. And Nancy in it. Dancing.” (Pg.95 and 96)

- Susan was most disturbed by the fact that Nancy was wearing the red velvet dress that Susan helped her make. Therefore, she was overwhelmed by these memories and saw it as a breaking of the memory.
