Characterization is the ability to portray characters so they they appear clear to the reader. We have characterization from how the characters act, what they say, and what others say about them. Every time the author tells a new fact about any character (the Clutter family, Perry, Dick) we learn more about them and understand why they act the way they do. Characterization provides the reader with information which then explains what we need to understand about the action in the story.
