Dick's jokes are a kind of facade which he uses to hide the fact that he is not nearly as cruel or confident as he would like people to think. Bitter is not a good word to describe the life of someone who has been married twice and jailed for passing bad checks. His "bitter life" is at best a good "excuse" for the reasons why he acts the way he does now.
