In America Character List

Maryna Zalezowska

Maryna is a tenacious woman. At 35-years-old, she decides to take a risk and start her life over in America where she will enjoy more freedom and opportunity. Although her commune idea falls through, Maryna recognizes that what she really wants is a second chance at acting. She throws herself into her career in San Francisco and soon, almost effortlessly, earns herself high fame and fortune. She changes her name to Madame Marina Zalenska, marking a shift in her identity from the Old World to the New.

Ryzard

Ryzard is hopeful young author. He seeks self-acceptance through his writing, making him the essential troubled artist, but he is kind nonetheless. Through his patient self-deprecation, he extends generosity to those around him, although he sometimes fails to pull his fair share because he's lost in his head.

Bogdan

Bogdan is Maryna's husband. He clearly takes a secondary role in their marriage, deferring to Maryna and her various exploits. He struggles to advocate for himself in the relationship because he's been engaging in secret affairs with men. Although he is not ready to admit it, he is gay. Bogdan is continually abused by Maryna for not standing up for himself.
