An epic hero is the main character in an epic (the narrative tale of the exploits of a man who represents the characteristics of the society in which he lives) who achieves his greatness by living out the life his society expects him to live. He conquers great challenges, lives what seems to be an exciting life, and ultimately meets his downfall because of his pride which is over the top (the Greeks called this hubris).

In the Iliad the greatest hero is Achilles.
