The irony of love
The irony of love is that it surpasses racial boundaries and ethnicities. When love knocks at the door, it is difficult to resist. Jeremiah is a black American man while Ellie is a Jewish girl but the two fall in love. Despite the threats of cultural differences, the two are ready to get married. Unfortunately, Jeremiah dies on his way to Ellie's parents to ask them for a hand to marry their daughter.
The Irony of Jeremiah’s father
Jeremiah's father is a satirical character because despite playing the racial card, he is a racist who discourages his son from marrying a white girl. According to Jeremiah's father, white people are blind and cannot see beyond their whiteness.
The irony of death
Death is a mystery, and no one knows why it knocks when no one expects. For instance, Jeremiah has overcome obstacles in winning Ellie's love, and he is about to marry her. Ellie agrees that Jeremiah should proceed to see her parents so that they can start marriage plans. Ironically, Jeremiah dies in a road accident while on his way to meet Ellie's parents.
The irony of religion
The reader finds it satirical that religious grounds can be used to discourage interracial relationships. Religion teaches that all human beings are equal before God, but on the contrary, a white girl is discouraged from marrying a black man and vice versa.
