What does O'Brien mean when he says "Things happened, things came to an end. There was no sense of developing drama."

This quote infers that O'Brien reached a point when he became emotionally detached from the horrors around him. There was life, and there was death........... but the sense of war had been numbed...... emotions were turned off.
