Did the war benefit O’Brien in any way? In other words, did he learn any valuable life lessons from his participation in the Vietnam War?

Well, he was able to write his book! It is the details within the book that provide the sense of loyalty, the absurdness of war, the indomitable human spirit and the frailty/cruelty of man which tells us what he learned.
