what made Mrs, Kirwin so memorable to Maya?

Miss Kirwin has no favorites, and really expects her students to learn about their world and keep up with news events. She also treats Maya no different because she is black, and tries to stimulate all her students equally; she ends up being the only teacher that Maya remembers.
