Momma faces numerous challenges over the course of the novel. She's running a store, raising her grandchildren, and trying to protect her family as a whole. She teaches her grandchildren to have morals, instills the necessity of a good education, and models the value of hard work. She hides Uncle Willie from the Klu KIux Klan, putting herself in danger, as well as her livelihood. When Bailey comes of age, she sacrifices her own desire to keep him with her and sends him away...... knowing the consequences and accepting what she can and cannot do for her family.
