I think that Mrs. Flowers' character is extremely inspirational. She was responsible for Maya's ability to break away from a devastating past, and she did it by inspiring and loving her rather than attempting to force her out of her shell. Flowers also inspires her to seek an education by modeling the woman Maya dreams of being; she is a mentor and role model. She lives what she preaches.
