Simon's Feelings for Rose and Cassandra
Whilst he is engaged to be married to Rose, Simon is falling in love with Casandra and carrying on a relationship with her. This is why his feelings of hurt and rejection after the elopement of his brother and his fiance is ironic. He is cheating on his fiance but his heart is deeply wounded when he finds out that she has been doing the same thing.
Cassandra Keeps Her Feelings to Herself
Cassandra loves Simon and when it transpires that he is not going to marry Rose she is secretly both excited and hopeful, because it means that they can get married without creating scandal or disharmony amongst the families. However, when Simon comes to visit with her before going on a trip to America, she acts in a way that makes it impossible for him to propose.
Mr Mortmain Purchasing the Castle
Mr Mortmain purchases the castle partly to provide him with creative inspiration for his writing. Unfortunately since he has lived there he has suffered from writers' block and has not been inspired to write anything at all.
Rose's Love Goals
Rose intends to fall in love with Simon and to make him fall in love with her, but she ends up genuinely falling in love with Neil, which does not help her finances at all, which is what she had originally intended.
Rose and Neil Hate Each Other
Rose and Neil act as though they hate each other, when in reality the opposite is true. The more they seem to hate each other, the more deeply in love they are actually falling.
