Swat's history is significantly important to Malala's story, in that most of her readers have no understanding of the circumstances of her shooting. For most of us, what she describes seems impossible, as we go about our daily lives with freedom of movement and thought. We have never experienced the cultural traditions she describes. We've never been denied an education, not have we been isolated because of our gender. The history Malala shares helps us to understand that her plight and experiences are widespread..... that they continue even now..... that there are others no longer alive to tell similar stories.

Malala's history also allows us to understand the love she has and will always have for her homeland. Regardless of what happened there, she will always miss the place of her birth.
