I Am Malala

Why does the Taliban condemn the education of girls and not the education of boys? What can you infer about the Taliban’s values?

from Chapter 13: The Diary of Gul Makai

When the Taliban tried to end girls’ education in Pakistan, eleven-year-old Malala Yousafzai stood up to them and subsequently became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In this excerpt from her autobiography, Malala recounts how she worked to advocate for girls’ education and describes the fear that her family experienced as a result. As her last day of school came to a close, Malala realized that finishing at the top of her class was not as important as access to education. Upset at being denied the opportunity to learn, she went on radio and television programs to raise awareness. Malala’s mother and grandmother worried about her and asked her to hide her face on camera. She continued to speak out, which eventually led to being featured in a New York Times documentary. At the end of the excerpt, she notes that in those days, every small noise could be bombs or gunfire.

There is an African proverb which states that "If you educate a man, you educate an individual. But, if you educate a woman you educate a Nation". This proverb, attributed to Dr. James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey explains why education, particularly in case of women is important for it can build a nation. Fear, is the cornerstone of Islam which in contrast to Christianity or the other Abrahamic religions is quick to punish any actions or beliefs that run contrary to its own. There are several passages in Quran and the Hadiths which encourage the devout to punish anyone whose thought patterns run contrary to Islam which are exploited by the unscruplous to suit their vested agenda.

Fear, is a natural reaction to something that is not expected, something that is not known or something that is not understood properly and is one of the basic things that keeps us alive. Fear gets eliminated when we develop a basic understanding of the thing which we feared earlier but now we fear it no more as we have a basic understanding of what it is or how it works.

The Taliban is not in favour of educating girls and young women because it could cause them to ask questions, which could undermine their authority. The Emperor wears no clothes and the people are aware about it, but they pretend to not to notice it and make false praise about the quality of the embroidery and the fine raiments, which the Emperor is assuming that he is wearing. This charade is lost when one shouts out the true fact that the Emperor is in fact, naked. Same's the case with Afghanistan as the Taliban do not want such dissenting thought as they have a country to run, because in the rugged mountains, democracy does not work and the man with the most power is the king, who in his desire to maintain his hold on power creates a reign of fear. Remove the fear, and the king is a king no more.

With reference to the main question, when compared to men, women generally are expected to take care of the household from the inside while the men are generally expected to take care of the household from the outside. A woman has more time and access to the members of the family and can mould their opinion far more better than a man could by means of familiarity and immersion. If a woman were to commit 'thoughtcrime' to which the Taliban is of the same opinion when it comes to the INGSOC, they would lose their hold as an entire family could rise in rebellion against them as no one likes to live in fear and the moment they get an opportunity they could either choose to fight their oppressors or flee from them. For education to happen, one must ask questions and attempt to find the truth by himself, in other words, one must follow the path of Socrates, Aristotle and Plato. Once a person starts asking questions, it will be difficult for the oppressor to maintain his grip on power as each and every syllable in the question will act as a crowbar which will bring the wall down.
