One example of this would be found in Malala's mother's marriage. She married for love, rather than the traditional arranged marriages of her people. Another example would be her reaction to Malala's stealing. Rather than rail at her daughter when she came home that day, Malala's mother did not speak.... she didn't have to, as Malala knew from her silnce that she'd done something wrong.
