Malala's grandfather was famous for his speeches. He was a teacher of theology which might have inspired some of her father's passion for education. His father however was too constrained and narrow in his belief system. He refused to let his son explore his own passions in education. Although his mother had little say in Malala's father's life as he got older, she was as supportive as she could be. She tried to cure his stutter and tried to be an intermediary between her son and father.
