Malala describes Swat Valley as a paradise. People lived relatively peacefully until the Taliban arrived in the year 2000. Things began to change. Girls were forbidden to be educated and there were strict laws about what people could and could not do. As Malala matures she begins to understand the socio-political reasons for what went on in her beloved home.
