After spending a happy afternoon playing with King, David's guard is down, and he realizes too late that he has come dangerously close to one of THEIR outposts. He and King hide beneath a bush, and David considers both his options and his likely fate. Eventually, he realizes he has to run; it's the only chance he has, and he has too much to live for not to try (see "Quotes," p. 184).
