C.S. Lewis's Narnia series comes to mind right away. This story can be read as a children's story, and Lewis certainly makes use of this genre, as the form is essentially that of a fairy tale. There are alternate worlds, benevolent and evil creatures, fantastical places....Of course Lewis's world is a Christian allegory but it keeps within the genre of fairy tales.
