Christopher Columbus and John Smith both wrote about their encounters with the Native Americans. They had different views on the Native Americans. Columbus declares in his journal that the natives would be good servants. He felt that they all had to be converted to Christianity because they were savage. Columbus writes, “It appears to me, that the people are ingenious, and would be good servants and I am of opinion that they would very readily become Christians, as they appear to have no religion” (PAGE).Columbus saw them as targets for conversion and hopefully people who could lead him to gold.
