Hurston opens her essay by admitting proudly that she is 100% African American and Black, and that doesn't bother her one bit. She spends the essay elaborating on all the ways that racism has incorrectly informed her sense of identity. Instead of being a little girl, she was called "a little colored girl." Before that, she didn't know that race was a thing people cared about. Then, through her life in Jacksonville, she began to know the truth, that subtly, she had been made to feel ashamed of her own heritage, as if she were made racist by her culture. This essay is a proud defiance against that feeling of shame, and she celebrates her African heritage fully.
