why does esperanza want so desperately to be sallys friend?

Sally represents an adventurous alternative to the life Esperanza sees that is cut out for her. Sally is flirtatious and experienced when it comes to the opposite sex. She is outgoing and wildly charismatic. Esperanza desperately wants to be a part of the excitement and curiosity that Sally represents. Sally, however, is abused by her father and Esperanza learns that Sally's life is far from perfect.
