Ruthie seems stunted, almost childish. Esperanza hopes she might be a fun aunt and encourage her to be an artist, a free spirit. I think Esperanza mis interpret's Ruthie's simple mindedness for artistic flair. Esperanza can infact read people better than Ruthie can which really makes us question Ruthie's intellectual capabilities.
